The sonnet isn’t essentially about growing old. The fact that we all grow old is a given, a starting point. The intention of the poem is centred on the present, and Shakespeare’s attempt to persuade the youth not to be celibate. It might help you if you read some of the others of the ‘Fair youth’ sonnets (the first hundred or so sonnets in the numbered sequence are to the fair youth – try, say, the first dozen).

The argument isn’t that the youth will grow old, but rather that he should take the opportunity to, in a way, cheat the process of aging, by having a child. Wouldn’t it be so much better if, when he’s 40, the youth, by that time wrinkled himself, could point to a ‘fair child’ carrying the older man’s likeness, but still unspoiled by time. That is the argument of the three quatrains, and the final couplet is the clinching statement banged home with a rhetorical thump – as Shakespeare often uses a rhyming couplet to conclude a speech or argument.
