Metal Detector Circuits

Of all the ideas for fun science fair projects, this is my favorite for students who want to learn more about modern communication techniques and technologies. Through this experiment, students will build their own radios that actually work and can be tuned. This is also one of the scientists fun fair project ideas for students who are interested in technology and engineering, and communications.

Like all ideas science fair project, this project requires some items to collect in advance, but the cost is still less than $ 50. In addition, students need be careful that they are safe when working with any type of electricity.

Objective:

Through this experiment, students build a radio receiver of the ground-up. Also tune the radio to improve performance.

Introduction:
The radios are an integral part of our culture. They help us communicate over the same house or in an entire world. Using this crystal radio, students understand the basics behind the construction of a functional radio system.

Terms and concepts you need to know:
This experiment is based on a set of terms and concepts that students learn before or during the experiment, including the following:

  • Radio frequency and radio wave
  • FM Radio frequency (amplitude modulation)
  • Resonance
  • Detector
  • Diode
  • Power and electricity
  • Antenna
  • Tuner

Materials needed:
To complete this project, will A variety of materials that can take a while to collect, including:

  • 1 round oatmeal box
  • 1 board mounting wood
  • 1 roll of plastic insulated wire (100 feet)
  • 1 diode germanium
  • 1 47 kOhm resistance
  • 1 clamp
  • 1 headphone ceramic
  • 4 clips Fahnestock (optional)
  • 1 multimeter

Procedure:
With the order to perform this procedure, you may want to have a father present. As with many ideas science fair project, safety should come first.

  1. Thread wire through 2 small holes you poke about 1 / 2 inch in the oatmeal box. The cable must go outside the box. Using a foot of wire on the outside of the box which is used as a connection to the circuit. Take the wire that is within the box that does not slip.
  2. Wrap the wire around the box 5 times. Remove some of the plastic insulation to twist the wires together.
  3. Make envelops every 5 laps to get to 40 laps total.
  4. Once you get to 40 turns, put another 2 holes in the box. Cut another foot on the wire in order to make extra cable outside the box. Push the wire through the hole to come out outside the box. Take the wire inside the box.
  5. Use an antenna and ground. This can be any wire that is not isolated. Place the antenna as high as possible, but not near power lines.
  6. Land of the antenna to a water pipe or metal bar that is at least 2 feet below ground.
  7. Hook the wire to a clamp and a center tap. Hook the new wire to the headset. Listen until you hear a noise. You may have to modify the radio to hear a noise, if not hear at first.

This is one of the great ideas of science fair projects, but it may take time to build and perfect. Always put safety and work with parents to ensure they are completely safe. Finally – have fun!
