The Polynesians were known for being homogenous individuals that successfully executed a very methodical way of migration and settlement to the Pacific. They settled Hawaii and brought in the most significant relic – the canoe. Early folks of Hawaii created rigid, one-pieces canoes used for racing, fishing, transportation and warfare. Unlike the other sailing vessels, the canoes can move even on rugged coastlines and through heavy waves.

This watercraft is recognized as a great contribution of Polynesians to smart water transportation. The outrigger does the function of calming down the unit particularly when navigating through island surf. Heavy surf can usually capsize some types of water vessels, but not the outrigger canoe. This remarkable watercraft can also be used in hauling cargo, fishing gear and passengers. Because of some advancement in technology, the outrigger canoe turned out to be large transport and fishing vessels. In some countries including the Philippines, they are equipped with gasoline-powered engines.

The outrigger canoe racing also became a very famous sport. In fact, there are several outrigger canoe clubs established around the world. And even in the face of sailboarding and surfing trends of the present time, the young Polynesians still appreciate and practice outrigger canoe racing. This activity is said to be a complete and traditional sport that combines all the delights of the contemporary world.
