Research is the most significant aspect of being a treasure hunter success. Without research amateur metal detector have to rely on luck and random and may never become a guru or an expert in this field. Research should be a priority! Section one will deal with research tools which are "things" and the second part we will deal with "people".

The things of the research can be found in libraries local or even easier on the World Wide Web. The first tool that is abundant in both libraries and the site is historical maps. If you find any good areas hunting, maps need to become your best friend. Finding a local source for these maps is very important. I personally have used the office of the municipality. This is a great resource for local maps, and a professor of geography at the secondary grade 9, it takes me more indirectly, doing a project three days with 16 of my best students. These bright young minds, examined hundreds of maps to try to find the city-owned sites that are potential sites for parking recreational /. His research I found several dozen metal detecting sites (more than what I found in the last weeks of personal research) and who were honored by the city fathers in the presence of three of its research sites are city parks and ball fields. Internet can only produce many sites can be detected, regardless of where you live, but do not depend only on the web. Local Historical Societies offer a wealth of information and also attend some meetings may open the door to the maps not found anywhere else.

Photographs of importance history are also a great source for finding metal detecting sites. Many books on the history of their community have photos of where people congregated 50 100 years (or more) back. Some of the best metal detecting is that I own wine photos showing the carnivals, sporting events, celebrations, religious gatherings, community dances and the parade route to name a few. The internet is again a good home with lots of good photo databases. Here are some of my favorites:

Aerial Photographs are a tool very useful for the detection of metals research. As a professor of geography in the 70s and 80s have collected hundreds of aerial photos of cities like New Orleans, Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and San Francisco. I learned the various patterns of city growth and development and have requested this seeking information on sites and dates for your specific location specific currencies. If I wanted to find a penny or a 1909 SVD 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter, I use both regular photos and aerial shots to find the construction and traffic patterns for 1909 or 1916. This does not work! A site that I have investigated the use of both types of pictures, produced five 1916 coins had to lose that year or shortly thereafter, since all were in extra fine to almost uncirculated condition.

A third source and finding powerful metal detecting sites are the historical books. As mentioned in the last paragraph of the books has wonderful historical photos to locate sites for metal detecting. They also provide records of events and show the pattern (s) by which the community developed. Knowing the pattern (s) of development is a key element in the dating sites for older relic and the coin. Every city in the developed world by a multitude of factors and understanding the growth and development of a city offers a wealth of information to detectorist that will influence the quality and volume the findings. Here are four basic theories that have helped me a lot and are easy to learn also: Concentric Ring Theory, Theory Sector, polycentric Theory and Theory of multiple cores. These theories of growth have been around since 1925 when it introduced the model of Van Methuen. All of these growth models urban use aerial photographs as well. I include books and magazines in a metal detector type of research called "Home Town Advantage. When you are armed with well-documented histories, you have a great advantage over most fans do not take the time to research. You also do not have to travel great distances to find good or new sites. The investigation of your own town or city will provide more sites than you can imagine. I have lived in the city Tarpon Springs, for 40 years and started metal detecting that on Christmas Day 1969. Thirty-nine years later, I have not hunted all my sites investigated in this city of only 30,000. However, I have found over 150,000 coins with 85% from the Sponge Capital of the World, Tarpon Springs, FL. The best place to find these historical documents is a local court house, the office of a clerk of the city, the library or historical society.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, research is the most important aspect of successful metal detecting. Chance and luck will not always be with you. Do your research priority and also depend on POP! Let's talk about "him", not him, in the second part of screening metals research.
