The metal detection … Is this possible?

Ok, let's say I know an area of land, perhaps 10 square miles or so, when a person buried a large quantity of gold coins back in 1800. And nobody has been able to find, because he died in an accident and took his secret with him. How does a metal detector? A metal detector works with a wire coil mounted below the sensing head, Wired in an oscillator. The inductance coil, and therefore the oscillator frequency will change when the metal is placed near the coil. Normally, the oscillator runs at an audible frequency and is fed directly a pair of headphones: the presence of metal is heard as a change in pitch. The larger the coil, more metal will need to bring that to have any effect on the frequency. Thus, a large metal detector would be less sensitive than a normal size one.
