Gemstone – A Girl’s Best Friend

Different shapes, sizes and colors of gemstones are found. But, there is that one stone, just one in the history of mankind; one created before life began on our planet. Diamonds- always associated with mystery, myth, magic and of course a girl’s best friend!

The most graceful and awe inspiring stone there ever was and ever will be is diamond. It captures light and holds in a way that no other precious or semi-precious gemstone ever could.

Do not just burn your wallet without knowing what is available the following compilation will help a novice buyer to locate the gemstone of their specification .

Respect and Integrity!

Whether for themselves or for a loved one, when someone buys a diamond, he or she expects it to be in its natural state, only having been subjected to the cutting and polishing process. The integrity of the diamond is everything and it must not be undermined by improper trading. Moment, commitment or love which is reflected in the gemstone at the significant moment should not be lost by the degradation of its integrity. Don’t forget to ask the trader for proper certification to claim that it was procured through the right channels and never was gotten through improper and inhumane traders at the time of buying.

Colors of Life

Diamonds are a particularly rare species of gemstone thus making it priceless and not easily available. There are many a number of traders who provide authentic diamonds which are acquired through proper trading practices ,unlike as shown on TV and other movies. Diamonds are classified on various areas like other gem stones. This particular gemstone is classified based on Gemstone color, carat, cut and clarity.

Diamonds can be found in many colours, however white-coloured or colourless diamonds remain the most popular.
D (colourless) to Z colour scale is used to grade diamond. When using a set in yellow gold warmer coloured diamonds (K-Z) are particularly desirable. Icy winter white coloured diamonds (D-J) look stunning set in white gold or platinum. Colour differences are very subtle and it is very difficult to see the difference between an E and an F, for example.

Truly colourless stones, graded D are treasured for their rarity. Colour, however, is subjective. The Incomparable, one of the world’s most beautiful diamonds, contains hints of brown, smokey amber and champagne colours. blue, green, yellow, orange, and pink shades are also found in natural gemstones. Red is the rarest of all. These extremely rare diamonds are highly treasured and are known as ‘coloured fancies’.

Carats to Clarity
Being a one time buyer or just a buyer who hasn’t been trained in gemstone colors or marking, we can not make much of what the seller is saying but it is always good to know! cut, carat and clarity

Cut, in the case of this gemstone refers to the angles and proportions. More than 50% of the rough diamond would need to be cut away to cut the diamond perfectly.
A perfect internal reflection of light from one mirror-like facet to another and dispersion and reflection of it through the top of the gem takes place when the diamond is well cut. A diamond is higher in quality and value when it is well cut than when it is deep or shallow cut.
Cut also refers to the shape of a diamond – round, square, heart or pear, for example. All the light that enters that enters the round diamond is completely reflected owing to its symmetricity. Non-round shapes, also known as ‘fancy shapes’ have guidelines in order that they are considered to be well-cut.

Carat refers to the weight of a diamond. Often mistaken with size, carat it is actually a measure of weight.
One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams. One carat can also be divided into 100 ‘points’. A .75 carat diamond is the same as a 75-point or 3/4 carat diamond.
Since larger diamonds are found less frequently in nature, a single 1-carat diamond will cost more than two 1/2-carat diamonds, assuming the colour, clarity and cut are the same.
A diamond can appear larger or smaller than its actual weight depending on the cut and mounting. A diamond’s setting should always optimise its beauty.

Clarity refers to the presence of inclusions or in layman’s terms the occurrence of defects in the gemstone.

Inclusions are natural identifying characteristics such as minerals or fractures, occurring while the diamond was being formed in the Earth.
The majority of these natural birthmarks are invisible to the naked eye, yet they affect the way light is reflected and refracted within the stone.

Clarity is the rank for scaling the perfection due to inclusions. Based on the visibility of inclusions at a magnification of 10x it is graded as F (Flawless) to Included (I). There are very few flawless diamonds found in nature, making these gemstones much more valuable.

I have put together this particular article and concentrated more on the aspect of gemstone colour since that would be the only aspect that is easily visible to the untrained eye. The rest are left up to the trained craftsmen to show us what is best. Hoping this articles does provide and insight on how a diamond; the world’s precious gemstone- is a girl’s best friend!
