Civil War Relic Hunting Sites
how to hunt for civil war/revolutionary war relics?
How does one go about using a metal detector to hunt for civil war and revolutionary war relics considering that most battlefields are protected and prohibit this kind of activity? How do people that own stores specializing in this stuff get their items? Sometimes the items are stuff they’ve retrived themselves from battlefield sites, so how are they able to do this? I’ve heard sometimes they do this on private land…..but how do they go about finding locations and getting permission to do this? Thanks for any information! While I like buying relics, I think it’d be much more exciting to find stuff myself.
That is the problem, most of the land is protected or private.
the only way to really find anything is to research areas where battles happened and use your information with modern and copies of old maps to try and figure out where activity could have happened.
You will probably need permission from the land owners or be a state certified Archaeologist to search at most sites however.
Honestly It would be a lot of work for maybe nothing more than a handful of old bullets.
Best of luck however.
OH! you could also try along river and stream banks. The Mississippi is filled with Civil war relics and a lot of activity both war and just daily life happened along rivers.
