Should the pirate hunters keep the booty or the Spanish pirates?
A 500 million dollar sunken treasure was found off of the coast of Gibraltar. Now the Spanish government is trying to claim the finders found it or stole it from their waters… Read more…tell me what you think! http://www.mayhemnetworks.net/blog/index.php/2007/05/21/a-modern-day-treasure-hunttreasure-found/
My understanding of international law regarding salvage was always that if the original owner of lost property in open seas has abandoned efforts to recover the property then the property belongs to the salvager who recovers it. from my point of view, the Spanish made no official efforts to recover the property for several hundred years—sounds like abandonment to me.
I have noticed that over the last 20 years or so, every time somebody makes one of these discoveries, somebody jumps up claiming a right to it, even though they haven’t even lifted a finger to recover it, and in some instances probably never even heard of it until it’s discovery.
I say let the treasure hunters who put their lives and fortune on the line to find this reap the rewards.
Besides, didn’t the spanish raid all of this trasure from the Incas, Aztecs, Mayas, etc. in the first place? What about their descendants. If anybody other than the Finder has a right to it, it is them.
